VALORTECH ERA Chair SUMMER SCHOOL

Valorization of Food Industry Wastes and By-products

Summer School
2021

The course includes lecture sessions provided by experts, laboratory-based course / hands-on training, and individual/group post-work assignments, presentations, visits to local farms and food industries.

By attending the lectures and workshops provided by the VALORTECH researchers and invited external speakers you will get an overview of the various types of wastes and by-products generated along the entire food supply chain. Participants will gain in-depth knowledge on food wastes and by-products management and valorization strategies. A series of interesting lectures would be offered, followed by hands-on training on various techniques (green technologies) employed to obtain value-added bioactive components that can have potential food and pharmaceutical applications. The participants will also learn about designing novel approaches for valorization technologies and proposing various modes for the conversion of biomass into bio-products.

Students who have successfully passed the course will:

- have a good understanding of the importance of managing food wastes, maximal utilization of by-products, and circular economy concepts

- be able to visualize and understand the need for the valorization of food wastes and by-products

- be able to propose novel sustainable themes for the valorization of food wastes and by-products

- be able to propose innovative methods to convert food wastes and by-products into value-added bio-products

- be familiarized with new green processing technologies, and

- able to identify potential industrial applications post-valorization of wastes/by-products.

The completed course provides 1 ECTS credit point (a certificate of attendance will be awarded upon completion of all sessions).

NB! Proof of being either vaccinated against coronavirus or of being recovered from the covid-19 or a recent negative test result will be asked from all onsite attendees.
